Santo Domingo, DN – In a heartbreaking incident that has left the community in shock, yesterday on 27 de Febrero, there was a partial collapse of the tunnel’s concrete, resulting in the entrapment of at least 8 vehicles. This tragic event, triggered by heavy rains that flooded the streets, raises questions about the responsibility of various entities.
The overflowing precipitation triggered the collapse, raising concerns about the management and maintenance of urban infrastructure. The community’s clear question is: Who is responsible for this preventable tragedy?
The Municipality is criticized for not unclogging the drainage systems, and the Department of Public Works is blamed for not providing proper maintenance to the tunnel structure. These factors, combined with apparent general neglect, have led to a tragedy that mourns the Dominican family.
The National Police released a list of the nine victims of the collapse, three of whom were foreigners and six Dominicans.
The victims were identified as Omar Alejandro Méndez Avilés, 70, Solange María Méndez, 31, Bonet Dobelier, 35, Ramón Martínez Cesani, 75, Awilda Vásquez Burgos, 68, María Nereyda Martínez Vásquez, 32, General Eduardo Cabrera Castillo, 65, and an undocumented Haitian national.
